Should UFC Fighter Paulo Costa be Allowed to Continue to Fight at Middleweight?
UFC fighter Paulo Costa recently lost to Marvin Vettori by decision. Before the fight, Costa requested to move up to 205 lbs. when it was originally supposed to be at 185 lbs. because he couldn’t get down to the 185-pound limit. Should Paulo Costa be allowed to fight 185 pounds again?
Dana White apparently thinks that Costa will have to fight at 205 lbs. In fact, he even stated, “We absolutely tell you where to fight when this happens. He is going to have to fight at 205.” White clearly showed frustration during this interview. He also praised Marvin Vettori multiple times by saying, “We were trying to keep this fight alive and make sure that it happened, and we couldn’t have done it without a guy like Vettori. Vettori acted like an absolute professional, stud, a guy that’s incredible to work with. That’s why this fight happened.” He also stated, “Again, you have to give all the credit to Vettori. He was willing to fight at any weight and didn’t let this stuff mess with hit head. At the end of the day, it’s all about the fight.”
Dana White is right. You must give Vettori credit for going into the octagon with somebody that weighs a substantial amount more than him. Not only that, but Dana White also said, “Vettori was 208 and Costa was 220.” That is a twelve-pound difference in between Marvin and Paulo.
Costa is also huge. He is extremely muscular and tall, especially for middleweight. I do not believe that he will be able to get down to 185 lbs. again. Even if he can, it would not be a particularly pleasant experience.
In conclusion, I don’t think that Paulo Costa should be allowed to fight at 185 lbs. again.
